Think regular TV as a single resolution. Televisions show standard definition analog programs. Regular cable TV, satellite and broadcast channels in this style of signal before the digital conversion required. Analog resolution is about 640 x 480 pixels. 625 analog displays contained lines. Digital television refers to standard-definition television viewed through an analog TV that uses a tuner to get the digital signal. Besides, high-def programs wont show as detailed a picture compared to what really shows up on a true HDTVs.

HDTV images show two times the detail of an analog set. The pixels of an image are small and crowded together. The end result is a sharper image. The picture quality is why HDTV is a great choice for the best home theater systems.

HDTV can have up to 1080 lines per screen. To qualify as a high-definition, the signal must contain a minimum of 720 horizontal lines scanned pixels, 1080 lines of 1080 pixels interlaced or progressive scan lines of pixels.

The ratio of a high definition TV looks like a rectangle, and has a 16:9 aspect ratio. Fortunately, the digital signal can travel a longer distance without interference. The bottom line: a clear and stronger image.

Of course, HDTV is the only choice for new television production. Analog sets can be used in conjunction with a converter to receive the digital signal.
